Mehmet Emin Hassan
As a London-based professional photographer, Mehmet Hassan has accrued over ten years of experience.Primarily a street photographer, Mehmet sharpened his skills in architectural photography, progressing naturally to shoot at eye-level, preferring to photograph London life as it happened, unguarded. Mehmet’s photography spontaneously captures people uninterrupted within urban locations.“I find street photography intoxicating, a place where I lose myself, the only thought crossing my mind is the patterns of people crossing my path. When I'm shooting on the streets I am constantly scanning, watching and anticipating the movements of the crowd ready to fire off my shutter.”Long-form documentary projects include Abandon, which is currently on display at the Cypriot High Commission, Piccadilly. Part of the There Is An Island III exhibition, Abandon explores the mountainous hamlet of Kantara, North Cyprus. Situated in the eastern part of the Kyrenia Mountain range, this once thriving community tells the story of modern Cyprus. “During the 1980s and 90s, I spent my summer holidays at Kantara. Weeks on end, my cousin and I would wander through this community in search of treasure, mischief, familial and familiar company. We were welcomed in, fed helim sandwiches and homemade candied orange peel served with iced water. We were looked after in the carefree parenting style that is now a thing of the past.”The community and bungalows now lay in dereliction, twice abandoned - once by the Greek speaking population after 1974, the second by the Turkish speaking population that left at the turn of the century. “I am a detail orientated person. I look to build narratives in all of my projects, both commercial and artistic. “I don't pretend that what I shoot is the full story. My photography is a construct of my mind and I consider each photo a self portrait.”
Q&A
What sparked your interest in photography?
My father. Forever behind the lens, when I was old enough, he gave me the family camera. Photography has been in my life ever since.
What inspires your work?
People, their behaviours and vulnerabilities. I have always thought of myself as a street photographer, but increasingly, I am moving towards a humanist style of photography.
What equipment do you use?
Leica Q, but vast majority of my portfolio is shot with a Nikon D750.
Did you study photography?
Nope, all self-taught.
Testimonials
I had the pleasure of working closely with Mehmet during our time together at London Victorian Ring Company, where he was the lead photographer and creative director for the business. As the e-commerce marketing head, I collaborated with him on numerous product and campaign shoots, and he was instrumental in bringing our creative visions to life.
Mehmet has an exceptional eye for detail — a crucial quality in a brand that demanded nothing less than excellence and precision. He consistently delivered beautiful, luxury-standard photography with creative flair, often working within tight budgets and constraints. His ability to conceptualise shoots, problem-solve technical challenges, and elevate ideas into stunning visual assets was truly impressive, enhancing the creative identity and commercial success of the business. The content Mehmet created was utilised across the e-commerce platform, email channels as well as organic and paid media.
Beyond the shoot itself, his post-production and editing skills were outstanding. Mehmet has a refined aesthetic and a deep understanding of how to craft imagery that speaks to a brand's identity and audience. Working with him was not only creatively inspiring but also seamless and collaborative — he brought both vision and professionalism to every project whilst being a complete pleasure to work with.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mehmet to any brand or team looking for a talented, thoughtful, and reliable creative partner.
